What are my breast biopsy options?

There are a number of different breast biopsies that can be performed either by a breast radiologist or breast surgeon. The various types of breast biopsy performed by specialized breast radiologists include:

• Fine needle aspiration biopsy: tests the fluid or cells from within the lump
• Core needle biopsy: removal of multiple samples via needle, usually with ultrasound
• Stereotactic biopsy: done during a mammogram, with sample removal via needle
• MRI-guided core needle biopsy: with MRI guidance, a core needle collects a sample

There is an additional test performed by breast surgeons, a surgical excisional biopsy. This involves the removal of a small portion of breast tissue while you're under anesthesia and is indicated in certain patients

What happens after a surgical excisional breast biopsy?

A breast biopsy is usually an outpatient procedure, and in most cases, you can go home as soon as the procedure is over.

In the case of a surgical biopsy, the procedure takes longer, and you'll need to spend a short period in recovery after the procedure. However, a surgical biopsy is still an outpatient procedure.

When will I get the results from my biopsy?

A pathologist examines your sample and sends the results to Dr. Sanghavi, who then discusses the results with you.

If your results indicate that you have cancerous cells, Dr. Sanghavi can go over treatment options and make recommendations customized for you.
